The Running Joke in the Background of SpongeBob SquarePants

Obsessive watchers of SpongeBob SquarePants might have spotted a running joke in the series. In many episodes, usually when some sort of disaster occurs, a voice in the background can be heard shouting “My leg!”
This unfortunate guy's name is Fred, and while he is visible in some episodes, he is best known for the "My leg" running gag, which began in episode 1b, "Reef Blower."
He has gone on to cry “My leg!” in numerous episodes. In The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, the line was changed to “My eyes!” and can be heard several times.
