One of the great rituals of growing up is being told reading in the dark will hurt your eyes. While it’s not necessarily good for you, it’s probably not going to send you to the optometrist’s chair.

We’ve all heard similar bits of advice about our health. While it might be well-intentioned, it might also not be terribly well-informed. To help separate the myths from the facts, UK-based employee benefits firm Unum has put together a list of 10 common health beliefs that don’t quite ring true. Check out some facts about brushing teeth, vitamin C, and how the nutritional value of carrots may have been overstated thanks to some World War II strategists.
