Before Godzilla was rendered on a computer, the iconic Japanese movie monster was played by an actor in a suit. Haruo Nakajima, 87, originated the character in 1954 and then went on to portray it in 11 more films. But smashing models of Tokyo wasn't always easy. Nakajima met with Great Big Story to describe his struggles: “Since materials were so rare [in post-war Japan], things like rubber were not available [to make the suit]. Instead, they used ready-mixed concrete,” he said. “I was sweating all over my face.”
