Deep in the Rocky Mountains lies a secret treasure, and it wasn’t stashed away by 19th century bank robbers or prospectors who struck it rich. Sometime between 2009 and 2010, Forrest Fenn, a former U.S. Air Force pilot-turned art collector/dealer, hid a 12th century bronze chest filled with gold nuggets, Spanish jewelry, and other priceless items in the Western wilderness. Around the same time, Fenn—now in his late 80s—self-published a memoir called The Thrill of the Chase. The book contains a poem with nine clues, which Fenn claims will lead readers to the treasure’s location, should they decipher their true meaning.

Adventurers have reportedly come close to finding Fenn’s famous cache of gold, but they’ve always returned empty-handed. Still, that hasn’t stopped countless others—including Vox’s own Estelle Caswell and Zachary Crocket—from following in their footsteps. Follow their journey by watching the video below.
