The Most Popular Books and Authors on TikTok Show Off a Love of YA Romance and Fantasy

From BookTubers and Bookstagrams to the latest trend of BookTok accounts on TikTok, more people are using social media to get into reading and help titles and authors gain popularity.

So much so, in fact, that The Knowledge Academy conducted a study to determine which books and authors were the most popular on TikTok. Researchers looked at just under 200 books, as sourced from Book Riot, Penguin, and other sites. Each book title was then typed into TikTok's search function, then ranked based on relevant hashtag views. Some books didn't make the cut because corresponding hashtags didn't come up in the search.

Based on the study, TikTok users can’t get enough books in genres like fantasy and romance, particularly for young adults (YA). With over 707 million hashtag views, Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows—the first book in her YA fantasy Six of Crows duology from the Grishaverse—was the most popular book on the list. Fellow fantasy author Sarah J. Maas took the top spot as the most popular author on TikTok with over 572 million hashtag views. Two of her books—Throne of Glass, the first book in her series of the same name; and A Court of Mist and Fury, the second book in her A Court of Thorns and Roses series—both made the list. In addition, romance books like Colleen Hoover’s 2016 contemporary novel It Ends With Us, about a complicated love triangle, appear in the top 10 ranking.
