The Office Crosses the Pond

The version of The Office that most Americans know is actually a remake of a British TV show that starred Ricky Gervais and aired in 2001. In 2005, NBC adapted that show’s office-based mockumentary format and cast Steve Carell as the man in charge. This time, the show was set at a paper company located in Scranton, Pennsylvania. 

The original British Office was created by Gervais and Stephen Merchant. Though it initially received moderate ratings and lasted just two seasons plus a Christmas special, it became a cult classic that grew into a smash hit. 

Still, no one was quite sure how The Office would land in the United States. Things were uncertain at first. “We were [thinking] we did a great show, but the numbers were iffy,” writer Greg Daniels told The Hollywood Reporter. “I remember the upfronts for the following [season], just getting these minute-by-minute calls about we were probably not—wait, we might be [renewed]. We might be if we cut the budget and also give back every bonus and every profit that we could make out the show.”

The Office was, of course, renewed. It ran for a total of nine seasons across eight years, becoming a major cultural institution in the process. Along the way, its deadpan yet totally absurdist style helped set the tone for television mockumentaries to come, and inspired megahits from Parks and Recreation to Modern Family. 

The Dunder Mifflin Family Lives On

The American Office is beloved for a number of reasons, but number one has to be its characters. Of course, Carell’s Michael maintained an aura of unhinged absurdity that permeated every scene. But Jim and Pam’s sweet romance, Dwight and Angela’s spiky barbs, and the lovable and hapless Phyllis all made fans tune in over and over again. Over the show’s seasons, characters new and old grew and developed, each becoming fan favorites in their own right. 

All these characters have helped The Office endure long after its final episode aired in 2013. As memes rose in popularity thanks to social media’s explosion, The Office was there, with screencaps of Michael screaming “no, God, please, no!” and Pam smiling wryly at the camera providing the perfect meme formats. The show still thrives on streaming services and regularly inspires YouTube compilations and quizzes, like the one you just took.
