Myths, legends, and folklore have given us a menagerie of bizarre creatures over the centuries, some of which are still with us today. (See: The Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot.)

While you might have a passing familiarity with mythic beasts, naming them can be tough. See if you can place these hybrid monsters in the quiz below.

Not all myths began as fiction. Before unicorns decorated Lisa Frank’s art, explorers like Marco Polo insisted they were real. Others marketed “horns” they claimed were sourced from the animal that carried healing abilities. Most likely, such expeditions caught sight of rhinos.

Even Christopher Columbus claimed to have spotted mermaids, though he lamented they were “not half as beautiful as they are painted, though to some extent they have the form of a human face.”

Columbus was being generous. What he probably saw were manatees.
