In 1884, an American author named Frances P. Sullivan published a book called the Standard Book of Riddles, Conundrums, etc.
Sullivan might have thought these puzzles were “standard,” but some of the rhyming quips and logic traps the book contained were nothing of the sort. (The difference between an “old fowl” and an “ancient ferry-boat,” Sullivan explains, is that “one is a foul old wherry, the other a ‘wery’ old fowl.”)
Thankfully the riddle below isn’t quite so convoluted, although it does rely on a similarly tricksy bit of word play. Can you work out the answer?
