In 1750, a collection of riddles and puzzles was printed in London, titled The True Trial of Understanding, or Wit Newly Reviv’d.

The book was published anonymously, but whoever compiled it brought together an intriguing mix of puzzles and punning riddles ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous: the answer to one of the riddles is “An old woman whipping her cat for catching mice on a Sunday.” Thankfully, the short rhyming riddle below is at the more sublime end of the scale—so can you work out what is being described?
