Compiled by the author Sarah Cutter, Conundrums, Riddles, Puzzles and Games was first published in New York in 1894. The book had several editions and remained popular into the early 1900s—its popularity no doubt bolstered by its descriptions of after-dinner entertainments such as “an Old Mother Goose progressive euchre party” and a game of “Tally-Ho Bezique” that involved vying teams counting the number of animals they could see from the window of their carriage home.

Amid all the late-Victorian era fun and games, however, were plenty of straightforward riddles and word-playing puzzles, including the one below. Can you work out which U.S. state is being alluded too?
