In Tune Twist, we run the lyrics of a hit song through multiple languages, then translate them back into English. Here’s a hint: This song was written by one member of an iconic band about another person in that band—but the tune was left off of the 1977 record it was intended for, much to the songwriter’s dismay.
“Of course, my first reaction was, ‘Why?’,” the singer/songwriter recalled, to which one of their bandmates replied, “‘There’s a lot of reasons, but because basically it’s just too long. And we think that there’s another of your songs that’s better, so that’s what we want to do.’ ... And then I started to scream bloody murder and probably said every horribly mean thing that you could possibly say to another human being, and walked back in the studio completely flipped out.”
The song ended up being a B-side to one of the band’s singles and found new life on a concert special 30 years later. “I never thought that [the song] would ever be performed on stage, would ever be heard of again ... and my beautiful song just disappeared. So for it to come back around like this has really been really special to me,” the songwriter said at the time.
