Over the decades, Disney has enlisted some of Hollywood’s best talents to bring its animated characters to life on screen.
Some actors have voiced multiple memorable characters. Take Phil Harris, whose credits include Baloo from The Jungle Book (1967), Thomas O’Malley from The Aristocats (1970), and Little John from Robin Hood (1973). Others are already bona fide celebrities when Disney taps them for a role—like Eddie Murphy, voice of the diminutive red dragon Mushu who serves as Mulan’s sidekick in 1998’s Mulan.
The answers in the quiz below are all in the latter category. You probably know the actors by name, but you might not have realized that they voiced these classic Disney characters. This could be especially true if you first watched the films as a kid: Disney introduced you to some very famous voices before you knew the real faces behind them. Plenty of Millennials, for example, could probably identify Nathan Lane’s voice as Timon from The Lion King (1994) before they ever knew who Nathan Lane was.
Each entry features a YouTube clip so you can hear the character speak. It’s a great hint if you need it, but fair warning—some of them may give away the right answer, and true Disney fans might prefer to guess based on the character image and name alone.
Here’s what we recommend: Take the quiz once through without the clips and see how you do. If there’s room for improvement, take it a second time and listen away. The movies are ordered from oldest to most recent release date—so if the first few are from before your time, you’ll probably nail all the later questions.
