The Cost of College the Year You Were Born

Depending on your age, a year of university tuition might have cost less than a semester of groceries today.

The adage that "education is a privilege" hits differently when you compare what college cost during your favorite Baby Boomer's birth year versus your baby's. In 2025, the annual cost of attending a four-year private college in the United States rose to $60,920. That's more than twice the sticker price of college less than two decades ago, and over three times the inflation-adjusted price of private school half a century ago in 1975.

The Senior Prom-to-Syllabus Week pipeline wasn't always the norm. In the early 20th century, getting a higher education often came down to having the right friends, funds, and features. Then came landmark legislation like the GI Bill in 1944 and the Higher Education Act of 1965, which opened more doors for veterans, women, and minorities and helped turn a college degree into one of the country's biggest paths to upward mobility.

But as enrollment numbers rose, so did tuition costs for public and private universities alike. What used to be an expense manageable with a part-time summer job has evolved into one of the largest financial commitments a family will ever make.

Even '90s nostalgia can't cushion the sticker shock: public college costs rose faster between 1980 and 1990 than in any other decade, jumping over 98% in ten years. To see how we got here, we looked at College Board data on average annual tuition, fees, room, and board at four-year public and private colleges from 1971 through 2025. And you don't have to rely on flashbacks to college calculus to see how much mom’s tuition would cost today—all historical numbers have been adjusted for 2025 inflation.

Here's what four quarters of skipping lectures and lounging around the quad cost the year you arrived.

Note: All figures cover average annual tuition, fees, room, and board at four-year institutions. Inflation-adjusted prices are calculated in 2025 dollars via the College Board.
