Disney Songs Help to Tell a Story
Throughout the decades, Disney has relied on music to tell a story. This is more than just adding instrumental tracks to tell us how to think and feel. This is more than just letting us know that something scary or sad is about to happen. The music is part of the storytelling in most cases.
There are a couple of exceptions. Raya and the Last Dragon didn’t opt for any singing, with the dialogue and adventure being the main event. Similarly, Pixar’s Brave opted for the storytelling to be told through the spoken elements of the tale. However, most other movies will use songs to add context.
Toy Story 2’s “When She Loved Me” was Jessie’s song, telling the story of how she was once loved by a little girl. That girl grew up and left her behind, and Jessie was left with the feelings of loss and abandonment, as she figured out what to do next. She offers it as a warning of what’s to come for other toys.
Frozen is packed with songs that add layers to the story for each of the characters. Olaf sings about why he loves the idea of summer, while Elsa has her iconic song about why she’s happy to live in her ice castle. Anna and Kristoff have their songs in both Frozen and the sequel, helping to share what’s in their hearts without disrupting the main dialogue all that much.
The songs in Disney movies are catchy, and that’s why they become so iconic. It’s easy to listen to a track and know the movie that it comes from purely because of the lyrics—the story that is being told.
