Why Disney Princesses Need Their Enemies
As much as we would love to see the Disney princesses succeed, they all need their enemies. Some of them don’t even realize they have an enemy in life. Just look at Tiana from The Princess and the Frog, who didn’t realize just how difficult some of those against her running her restaurant would make her life.
However, a villain is always important, especially in a fairy tale. Remember that these stories are created for children, and that means a story of good overcoming bad. We all need that reminder that with patience, love, hard work, and kindness, we can all achieve greatness.
The enemies of the Disney princesses are the obstacles in life. They are the people who will put us down or prevent us from shining. Cinderella’s Lady Tremaine puts all her focus on her daughters, putting her stepdaughter down and raising brats in the process. Meanwhile, Tangled’s Mother Gothel wants immortality, and she is willing to kidnap a child and lock her away.
These princesses need to realize that their lives are worth more than what they have. While Rapunzel is a little more naïve compared to Cinderella, they both still realize that everything that is happening to them is wrong and that there is goodness out there to help.
As we get older, we want to see the other side of the story. It’s why the novel Lady Tremaine by Rachel Hochhauser has become a major hit, and it’s why people fell in love with the show Once Upon a Time. However, for children, it’s all about overcoming evil. In the end, good has to win out, and the aim is to show children that they need to be on the side of good.
