How did you do? We’re sure the King stans out there managed to get all eight. If you didn’t, why not use spooky season as a time to do a King read-athon and work through his works? Even if you did get all eight questions right, there’s never a wrong time to visit (or revisit) his books.
Best Stephen King Books When You Don’t Want Horror
While King is best known as the King of Horror, he hasn’t just written horror novels. He’s written dystopian worlds, and he’s created thoughtful pieces of prose that are going to have you contemplating your own life for days.
One of the most iconic books to read if you don’t want straight-up scares is The Green Mile. Sure, at the heart of it, there is horror, but it’s not monsters jumping out of the dark. This is a story about humanity (or lack of it) and society.
When you want something without supernatural elements, Mr. Mercedes is the one to check out. This is a crime thriller, with a full cat-and-mouse chase that leaves you clinging on until the end of the novel. With taunting letters and unsolved murders, you’re pulled into the investigation that is packed with thrilling twists and turns.

Another great read is actually a novella, and you’ve likely watched the movie adaptation. “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption” brings a tale of a man who may or may not have killed his wife and her affair partner. It’s a story of human nature and resilience, making it clear that some people can play the long game.
What if you could travel through time? 11/22/63 is the book to read, and it’s sure to bring up questions about whether the butterfly effect is worth risking. A man finds out that he could change history by preventing the assassination of John F. Kennedy, but what happens after that? And beneath the sci-fi, there’s a moving love story within the pages.
