The Women Who Made Music Their Own
The decades have brought us some of the greats. When you first think of female singers and musicians, Aretha Franklin is sure to stand out. “I Say a Little Prayer for You” was arguably her best-ever performance, and it’s one of those songs that you can put on to make yourself feel better. The “Queen of Soul” will forever live in our hearts.
Celine Dion is also sure to be at the top of the list for many, especially thanks to the movie Titanic. In fact, Supernatural fans are sure to get a chuckle out of the mention of Dion — if you know, you know! The French-Canadian singer quickly became known as “The Queen of Ballads,” and for good reason. Even with the likes of Mariah Carey and Faith Hill, Dion managed to keep hitting at the heartstrings with each of her performances.
Need another “Queen” in the music business? Madonna quickly became known as the “Queen of Pop,” with her four-decade career bringing some of the most iconic hits. Who doesn’t sing along to “Like a Virgin” and “Vogue?” Madonna has proven what it takes to keep her career strong, working with the changing styles of pop music and bringing tracks for the masses.
Ella Fitzgerald is a woman who has to be mentioned. The “First Lady of Music” became known as the “Queen of Jazz,” winning 13 Grammy Awards. She performed with many of the male greats, including Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole, but she stood out on her own accord, becoming a hit thanks to her vocal range and ability to connect to our souls.
Alanis Morissette is another queen of music. She takes the title of "Queen of Alt-Rock Angst," becoming a cultural phenomenon in the 1990s. After a breakup, she quickly grew up with her music and decided it was all worth the risk of going from Canada to Los Angeles. Where would we be without her?
Of course, we cannot overlook the “Queen of Country,” Dolly Parton. Where would we be without this powerhouse of a star? Not only has she had hits like “Jolene” and “9 to 5,” but she has stood out personally. This is a woman who wants to make the world a better place, gifting 197 million books to children, and proving that authenticity and hard work pay off.
Whichever type of music style you prefer, you can’t deny that there have been some amazing female musicians. Just how well do you know them all?
