Did you know there are 13 official Disney princesses in the Disney franchise? This includes Pixar movies—many people forget that Brave is a Pixar movie, not a Disney one. The real question is: how well do you know these princesses? Can you remember their very first songs? We have a quiz for you:

Some of the first songs are the most iconic ones. However, not all the songs hit big, and they’re more of an introduction to the characters. So, how did you do with this quiz? Did you manage to get 10/10? If you did, we’re impressed.

Two Disney Princesses Break the Cardinal Rule

As you start to look through all the Disney princesses, you’ll realize that there are two who don’t follow the cardinal rule of being a Disney princess, and we’re not talking about whether they are princesses or not! It’s all about singing.

Merida and Raya don’t have their own songs. While Merida sings a lullaby with her mother in the opening moments, it’s not officially a full song, and so, she’s classed as one of the Disney princesses who break this cardinal rule of having a major singing moment.

As for Raya from Raya and the Last Dragon, she doesn’t sing at all. This wasn’t an oversight, though. It was a deliberate creative choice, keeping the focus on Raya’s story while emphasizing the movie's cultural approach.

Raya’s story is an adventure. There’s this focus on the quest and reconciliation, meaning that there isn’t the time or space for an introspective song, and that’s the whole point of the music in the Disney movies. The fact that most people don’t realize that she doesn’t have a song makes it clear that it probably wasn’t even that necessary in the first place!

Music remains an important element in both Brave and Raya and the Last Dragon. They just don’t involve the main princesses singing.

Meanwhile, Moana and Frozen are two that may have tripped you up in the quiz. While the big songs for Moana and Elsa are the showstoppers, their first singing moments come a little earlier in the movies. Elsa is tricky—she’s queen by the time she sings, and her speaking parts in “Do You Want to Build a Snowman” don’t count—yet she starts out the movie as a Disney princess. Moana’s first song happens when she’s a young girl, even though “How Far I’ll Go” likely comes to mind first.
