Even people who don’t pay attention to pop culture can tell you that Superman hails from Krypton and Spider-Man is a New York City native. What they probably can’t say is where Groot came from.

In the multiple-choice quiz below, you’ll find out just how well you can name the places of origin of a dozen superheroes across DC and Marvel Comics. They’ve all been featured on screen in some way or another, be it an animated TV series or a blockbuster movie, but they haven’t all been given the same level of mainstream attention.

Avid fans know that characters often show up in various comic runs and screen adaptations with different backgrounds, connections, and even names, which sometimes makes it hard to pin down a definitive birthplace. We’ve tried to stick to characters whose original location has stayed the same throughout their appearances—but pay attention to every a.k.a. in the quiz so you know, for example, which Blue Beetle we’re talking about. And remember that you’re guessing where the character came from in the comics, not wherever they happened to be in a movie or show.
