Why Best Friends Are Necessary in Movies

It doesn’t matter if you’re watching a rom-com, a horror, or a deep, intellectual story, the best friend is one of the most important characters in the story. They’re there for multiple needs, whether it’s to be emotional anchors, support, or to create life lessons.

Let’s take Frodo on his journey to destroy the dangerous ring in The Lord of the Rings. Whenever he is disheartened along the way, Sam is there to encourage him. He’s there to offer moral support and make sure the task is fulfilled.

In Scream, Tatum is there to offer Sidney the support she needs when there’s a killer on the loose. That killer comes after Sidney, and Tatum doesn’t bat an eyelid about Sidney coming to her house to stay. She doesn’t make fun of Sidney for feeling scared about staying home alone, and in Scream 7 we learn that Sidney loved and respected Tatum so much that she named her daughter after her.

As the Toy Story franchise continues, Woody and Buzz end up becoming best friends. Sure, they start off as enemies, but after the initial grief of Buzz finding out that he is just a toy, the two bond and look out for each other. They trust each other when it comes to getting out of jams and finding their way back home, and they respect each other for the decisions they end up making at the end of Toy Story 4.

Some of the best friends are in the comedy movie Bridesmaids. You wouldn’t often think that a comedy would offer too much in the way of meaningful relationships, but the women support each other throughout stressful life changes. That comes off the back of Clueless, which highlighted the importance of having strong female friendships in the ‘90s.
