There have been many fictional pets that have touched our hearts and made movies memorable. The good news is that the movies from the ‘90s tended have happy endings, so we didn’t have to worry (too much) about the dog meeting a sad fate. The Heart of Family Pets in Movies
If you’re anything like me, you now quickly Google to see if an animal is going to get hurt in a movie you’re about to put on. Yes, Marley & Me, I’m looking at you for that trauma! That seemed like it was going to be a heartfelt family movie about a loyal dog, and it ended up breaking our hearts at the end.
The family pet is one of the most important elements of many movies. It’s a chance to show unconditional love. No matter how much trouble they create or how much mischief they get up to, they end up coming home and helping you pick up the pieces. It’s what made Marley & Me so heartbreaking, because he was filled with unconditional love to the point he didn’t want his humans to worry about him when it was his time to go.
Animals can also be the plot catalyst or the main focus. Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey is a story about three pets who are trying to get home to their family. They don’t understand what’s actually happened, and they think that their family is out looking for them. In the end, they created a bit of a problem of their own, but it was a wild adventure that took us on a journey of perseverance and love.
There is also a push to show just how fiercely loyal pets can be. Beethoven offered that, with some humorous effects. At the same time, they show the understanding that pet owners have for their animals, as you can’t put human feelings on family pets.
In the end, the pets become the heart of many movies.
