Why Thanksgiving Episodes Were So Popular in Sitcoms
While holiday specials still have their moments, the idea of a Thanksgiving-themed episode isn’t as common. Ghosts had one during season 5, but that special wasn’t as popular as the Halloween or Christmas moments. Yet, in the ‘90s, Thanksgiving-themed episodes were all the rage.
They created excellent bottle episodes, offering high emotional stakes in one single location. Everyone gathered in one person’s home, with absolutely no need to set foot outside. Sabrina the Teenage Witch could create a story within one room in the magical realm or see Sabrina and her aunts try to be mortal for the day, while Everybody Loves Raymond stuck to Raymond’s house, where all the drama happened.
There were some excellent everyday events that people could relate to, whether it was new family members coming over, the pressure of preparing such a massive meal, or trying to stick to others’ traditions when you just wanted to bring in your own. Of course, there was always an unexpected guest to add to the fun.
On top of that, Thanksgiving brought realism to even supernatural comedies. These episodes allowed any show to bring an element of normal life, with real-world dynamics that everyone could relate to. Even if you didn’t celebrate Thanksgiving, you could liken it to other holidays or other times of the year.
Family friction became the name of the game, and the idea of “chosen family” became a common theme among shows like Friends and Seinfeld. There was a chance to focus on the true nature of the holiday through kindness and giving.
Over the seasons, certain traditions could be set. People could look forward to seeing the next Thanksgiving hijinks, creating familiarity and annual activities to look forward to.
