There are certain movies that have stood the test of time, becoming classics put on every single year. One of those is Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, and whether you classify it as a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie, you know that it’s a firm favorite in many households. How well can you remember each of the characters before you do your next rewatch? We have a quiz for that!

Did you score 8/8? If you did, you’re a Nightmare Before Christmas expert, and we know you’ve watched it many times. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t watch it again! And if you got some of them wrong, why not make it the best excuse to watch it this Halloween?

The Heart of The Nightmare Before Christmas

The Nightmare Before Christmas initially comes across as a fun Halloween movie for kids. It reminds us that the holidays are best kept separate, and they all have their place. However, the enduring notes of the movie are captured in the dark whimsy and expressive heart: the characters.

There is one true evil character in the entire story, and that’s Oogie Boogie. All the rest simply love their holiday, and they don’t understand why they can’t seep into other wonderful times of year. Then there’s the fact that there’s a touch of love within the tale.

Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, is the stylish and charismatic lead, and he brings up a complaint that many people face year after year. It’s always doing the same thing. It’s not that Jack wants to destroy another holiday, but that he wants to do something different. He still wants to scare, but dressed as Santa Claus—or Sandy Claws—as he knows the man as. Don’t we all want to do something different now and then?

To complement him is Sally, a ragdoll creation who is soft-spoken and resourceful. She shows what it means to be empathetic and caring, finding ways to add a voice of reason to many of the characters’ actions. There’s an element of longing, and she brings a message of perseverance and kindness.

Of course, there is the most beloved character of all: Zero. He is Jack’s loyal ghostly dog, with a glowing nose, who is ready to spring into action. He is the perfect companion for Jack’s mishaps and schemes, but also adds a layer of love to the heartfelt story.
