When it comes to Disney parents, the moms, unfortunately, don’t tend to fare all that well. In fact, many of them have passed away before the movie even begins, and yet, they remain important to the story. It does make it a little harder to figure out who the moms are to each of the characters. We have a quiz for you that will put your Disney knowledge to the test. Watch out for some of these, as we’ve put the exact movie we’re looking for—there are some Disney moms who have different names in different variations!

The Most Tragic Moms In the History of Disney Movies

There’s no doubt that Disney does a number on our hearts when it comes to the moms in the stories, although it's not like the Disney dads fare that well, either! Bambi was a sign of the things to come in future decades. While the death wasn’t shown on the screen, it was clear that the mom had been shot and killed by the hunter, leaving a young Bambi to figure out life alone. It’s the tragic reality of wildlife around the world.

At least Bambi got to know his mom. Characters like Tarzan and Quasimodo don’t even get to know their mothers, both dying when they were babies. At least, with Quasimodo, that’s something we can infer from the opening storytelling in The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

It’s hard to tell when some of the Disney princesses lost their moms, as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs doesn’t make it all that clear. While the Brothers Grimm set the death for just after childbirth, in the Disney movie, she is said to die during Snow White’s childhood, giving Snow White a chance to get to know her mom.

Ariel does get to know her mother briefly, although we don’t get that story during The Little Mermaid. It is the sequel when we finally get the backstory, with Queen Athena dying heroically after her eldest daughter’s fins are trapped in rocks. The backstory helps to fully explain King Triton’s hatred for humans and overprotectiveness for his daughters, and it’s nonetheless tragic.

Young Tod from The Fox and the Hound can join with Bambi in losing his mom to man. In this case, it’s not clear how much Tod would have remembered, as he is a young fox cub, but his mom flees the nest to protect her young, dying in the process. Just like with Bambi’s mom, it isn’t shown on-screen, but the gunshots tell us everything. At least, Tod finds a mother figure in the old widow who took him in.
