In the mid-1800s, two businessmen named Frederick W. Bailey and James Noyes established a publishing and bookbinding firm in Portland, Maine, under the name Bailey & Noyes. From the late 1850s to early 1860s, the company began producing a series of children’s chapbooks, including wildlife guides, bedtime stories, and a short collection of riddles.

Given the younger audience, many of the riddles were fairly straightforward—but there were still several more challenging puzzles alongside those for readers to get their wits around. The rhyming riddle below is just one of them. Can you work out what is being described?
