This is another riddle taken from one of the very first modern anthologies of riddles published in the English language, The Riddles of Heraclitus and Democritus, from 1598.

Despite appearances, this book was not actually written by—and does not have anything to do with—either of the Greek philosophers in its title. Its author is anonymous, and presumably only attached Heraclitus’s and Democritus’s names to their work to give it a little fake prestige.

The language in the riddle below has been updated from Elizabethan English to make it a little easier to digest, but it’s still a fairly tricky one. See if you can work out what item is being described in roundabout (and somewhat risqué) terms.
