The highest-grossing directors are those who can direct amazing hit after amazing hit and continue to bring fans to the movies with each new release. Here are the top money-making directors today, based on data compiled by Statista in January 2026.

Steven Spielberg: $10.7 billion

Steven Spielberg has become a household name across his decades of directing experience and 37 films, which have earned him a whopping $10.7 billion at the box office. He has had successful standalone films like E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Saving Private Ryan, and Schindler's List, which won him an Oscar for Best Director in 1994. But his franchise movies have brought in big bucks as well. His highest-grossing film of all time was 1993's Jurassic Park, and in 1997 he returned for a sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, which also fetched a pretty penny.

James Cameron: $9.8 billion

James Cameron also enjoyed enormous box office success with franchise films from the Terminator and Alien franchises as well as the Avatar movies. He comes in second place behind Spielberg, possibly because Spielberg has directed more films, but the films Cameron has directed have made big bucks. Three of the five highest-grossing films of all time—Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Titanic—were directed by Cameron.

Avengers: Endgame is the second-highest-grossing movie of all time, and its prequel, Avengers: Infinity War, also makes the top 10 list.

Peter Jackson: $6.6 billion

Peter Jackson has directed films like King Kong and documentaries about The Beatles, but it’s his work in Middle-earth that has made him the most money. Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, released in 2001, 2002, and 2003, made him the most cash at the box office, followed by additional films covering the series' prequel, The Hobbit. In 2004, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, the final installment in the series, earned Jackson three Oscars for Best Picture, Best Writing, and Best Director. It was also his highest-grossing movie.

Michael Bay: $6.5 billion

Michael Bay has a reputation for directing action flicks that turn into summer box-office cash. His directing credits include blockbusters like Pearl Harbor, Armageddon, and Bad Boys. But his best commercial successes have come from the Transformers franchise, which includes movies like Transformers and Transformers: Age of Extinction.
