The Best Supporting Characters on ‘80s Sitcoms

There have been some side characters who are far more memorable than others. In fact, they end up with their own shows. Just look at Frasier Crane on Cheers. He ended up with his very own show, moving back to Seattle to live with his father. It led to more details of his life, including getting to see one of the best sibling dynamics on the screen with Niles!

While Frasier was one of the favorites, there were other side characters who we quickly fell in love with on Cheers. We could never overlook Norma Peterson and Cliff Clavin, nor can we forget about Lilith Sternin, who would often debate with Frasier and the rest in the bar.

Family Ties had some great supporting characters, with Irwin “Skippy” Handelman one of the most memorable. He was adorably dorky, and we couldn’t help but hope that one day he would find a woman of his dreams, even if it wasn’t Mallory.

Speaking of Mallory, there was another side character who slowly grew on us. At first, Nick Moore was more of a guest star, but he would eventually become more prominent, and we could see what Mallory saw in him.

Full House was the home (no pun intended) of some of the best side characters ever. In fact, one of them became a beloved member of the revival, Fuller House. For the longest time, we loved watching Steve Hale prove that he was a reliable boyfriend and good man. There’s no doubt that we were all disappointed to find out that he and DJ didn’t initially end up together, but Fuller House fixed it all in the end.

Not all supporting characters walk on two legs. The dogs often become some of the best characters, and that was certainly the case with Comet, the lovable golden retriever.
