The Signature Parents Style From the ‘90s

As you look back at comedies from the 1990s, do you notice that all the parents seem to have the same style? Sure, this says a lot about the fashion at the time, but it’s also a clear indication that they were the parents, and that they had a particular role in the show or movie.

Moms tended to wear high-waisted jeans—although, as they come back into fashion, it’s easy to see why because they’re so comfortable—and a tucked-in blouse or oversized sweatshirt. There was a slow move from the style of the ‘80s into the ‘90s, and we could see it in the moms’ styles. Of course, white sneakers or black loafers tended to be the preferred shoe of choice.

As for the dads, it was all about khakis with a brown leather belt. Sometimes, they would opt for jeans instead, depending on the type of job they had. The shirts were always tucked in, and you’d see them wearing polo shirts more than dress shirts. Loafers and running shoes were popular, and why not? They were comfy!

Then it came to the parenting approaches. There tended to be specific styles, depending on the nature of the children. Some would have an unstructured way of parenting, making sure children stayed outside instead of in the home all day, creating a bridge between the parenting styles of the past and those of today.

Then there were others who were strict but in a compassionate way. This was the decade when we saw the move into gentle parenting. They didn’t let their children get into trouble, but they were understanding and listened to the feelings of the children. Now you just have to decide who your favorite ‘90s comedy parent was.
