Disney villains tend to be the ones most people think about when it comes to movies from the ‘90s. Let’s just start with Scar from The Lion King. This is one of the first Disney movies to show a death on screen, and it made us hate Scar all the more, right? He was after one thing and one thing only: power. He didn’t care what it meant to get it, becoming a monster who would kill his own brother and blame it on his nephew.
There’s something dark and twisted about someone who is willing to do that. Making him a lion helped to soften the blow a little. Could you imagine if that was a human character?
Speaking of the human villains, there was one who was willing to do whatever it took to gain control: Jafar. The Aladdin villain quickly proved that he didn’t care about other people when he sent Aladdin into the Cave of Wonders to steal the lamp. Fortunately, his greed would become his undoing, but there’s a reason he was one of the villains used in Descendants to bring us the first offspring of the characters.
Not all of the best ‘90s villains came from Disney movies. There’s one that stands the test of time: Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Anthony Hopkins won an Oscar for his portrayal of this character, and it was well deserved.
Another actor who won an Oscar for their portrayal of a villain is Kathy Bates, and it was all thanks to Annie Wilkes in Misery. Bates has always proven her acting range with every role, and Annie brought an unhinged performance that movie buffs will never forget.
