The Worst Bosses in Comedies

One of the ways for movies to get a good laugh out of the audience is to create a situation that we can all relate to. We need to laugh, because otherwise, we’ll end up crying! So, having a nightmare of a boss is a great place to start, and it’s part of the reason there are so many terrible characters onscreen.

Gary Cole played one of the best terrible managers, bringing Bill Lumbergh to life in Office Space. He was passive-aggressive and monotonous, but can we just talk about always having that coffee mug in his hand? This isn’t a man who shouts and yells. He crushes people through memos and cubicle reassignments, and if you know, you just know!

We can go a little further back to 1980 with 9 to 5. Franklin Hart Jr., played by Dabney Coleman, who was chauvinistic and sleezy. He only did things to benefit himself, and he only realized that he needed his staff once they started revolting. Even then, was it ever going to change anything forever?

Modern-day movies haven’t moved away from the tough boss trope. The Devil Wears Prada made us hate the idea of working for a fashion magazine, while Horrible Bosses made the workplace look like a literal nightmare.

Fortunately, most of us don’t have bosses nearly as bad as the ones movies have shown us, but we know what to look out for because of these characters.
