A Series Grounded in Real Tech

When Star Trek first started, creator Gene Roddenberry had one wish. He wanted a show that would be grounded in real tech. Of course, this was set centuries into the future, so it’s not like he could know what would happen, but he used common sense and knowledge to come up with ideas that could happen in the future.

Let’s just look at The Communicator. Considering technology was growing to bring phones in the 1960s, it wasn’t all that surprising that Roddenberry thought that some form of communication device that would be used without a landline would happen. In fact, within 10 years, Motorola released the mobile phone, and then the flip phone was developed.

Star Trek: The Next Generation came up with Personal Access Display Devices, also known as PADDs. You know what they looked like? Well, little tablets that people could use to control apps and devices from wherever they were on the ship. There’s a form of technology that is similar to that now: tablets!

Even computer voice assistance was a part of the Enterprise for the longest time. That was long before Alexa and Siri became a huge hit, and now, many houses have the voice assistants to do jobs throughout the day and to play music. This form of technology is still growing, but it makes the assistants on the Enterprise feel grounded in reality.

In the TV series, technology was used to advance humanity. It was used to prevent an apocalypse as much as possible and not used to harm, where the Star Trek shows could avoid that. This was a way to show what the power of technology could be in the future, but that relies on humans to follow suit.
