The Music Shifts in the 2000s

This side of the Millennium saw a huge shift in the way people listened to music. For one, illegal file sharing grew in popularity. It led to a major financial disruption to the music industry, and saw a shift from people listening via a CD to downloading tracks to listen on their MP3 players. Music companies have to shift with the times, bringing in their own methods to listen digitally in legal ways, birthing Apple’s iTunes as just the start.

When it came to the type of music people listened to, teen pop continued to dominate the tracks in the early 2000s. After the initial success in the late '90s, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilera, and many more would continue to make headlines and chart the airwaves. However, some of the bands would start to break up, with Destiny’s Child breaking up for Beyoncé to go solo and NSYNC ending for Justin Timberlake to start his solo career.

The R&B and hip-hop scenes also started to take over, especially later in the decade. Eminem, 50 Cent, and OutKast all started to chart, making it clear that rap and hip-hop were now “mainstream” and going to stick around.

But the rock scene was also still popular. Pop-rock and pop-punk started to chart, with the likes of Blink-182 and Green Day growing in popularity. Then there was the alternative rock, known as Nu Metal, that came about thanks to the likes of Linkin Park. We also can’t forget how garage rock saw a revival with The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys.

This was a time when music dominated, with everyone getting a piece in the charts, and it’s only been able to grow from there!
