Some people have a natural knack for math, while others wipe it from their memory the moment they graduate from high school or college.
Depending on your career, you might use math every day, or avoid it at all costs. If you fall into the latter group and haven’t faced an equation in years, even elementary math might seem tougher than you remember. It’s not necessarily more advanced, just no longer fresh in your brain.
The New York State Education Department released third-grade math test questions for 2026. These sample problems show up on tests and quizzes throughout the year after students learn the tools to solve them. Here are eight to test your skills.

Did you ace it, or did your math memory fail you? Some of these questions might have thrown off those who removed math from their minds years ago, while others were easier. Either way, you probably got a few right, especially if your multiplication tables are still ingrained.
THIRD GRADE MATH

Third grade turns a chapter in the world of numbers, covering more than simple addition and subtraction. Students learn to tackle more complex multiplication, division, and word problems. Multiplying fractions joins the mix, along with writing and rounding large numbers.
Measurement is also a big part of the curriculum. Third graders are instructed to calculate elapsed time, measure weight and capacity, read graphs, and understand area and perimeter.
One example of a third-grade math question not included in the quiz is:
A square is cut into eight parts. Each part has the same area. What fraction of the entire area of the square is each part?
Once again, you’re either already working out the answer in your head, or scratching it in confusion.
The answer? 1/8. Why? Because the entire square is divided into eight parts, and each portion represents one of those eight parts, written as a fraction.
If fractions are not in your wheelhouse (you’re certainly not alone), and language is more your thing, you might be better at solving word equations. For example:
A group of students collected trash to clean up their neighborhood. The trash they collected each month for two months is shown below.
The trash collected in September was 59 kilograms.
The trash collected in October was 81 kilograms.
What is the difference, in kilograms, between the trash collected in September and October?
The difference is 22 kilograms (81-59).
