Watch this Giant Squid Swim Alongside a Diver in Japan

Spectators in Japan's Toyama Bay were treated to a rare appearance by a ginormous sea monster on Christmas Eve. A 12.1-foot squid swam close to the surface, making it visible to the fishing boats it was swimming beneath.

One diver in particular, Diving Shop Kaiyu owner Akinobu Kimura, dove into the water to get a closer look at the creature.

“This squid was not damaged and looked lively, spurting ink and trying to entangle his tentacles around me,” Kimura told CNN. “I guided the squid toward to the ocean, several hundred meters from the area it was found in, and it disappeared into the deep sea."

It’s unclear why the Architeuthis, typically a deep-sea dweller, wandered into the bay.
