The sponsors of the Tuition Giveaway Contest are Mental Floss LLC and Merriam-Webster, Inc.
The Contest ends at 11:59 P.M. Eastern on January 31, 2009 (the "Submission Date").
Eligibility: The Contest is open only to legal residents of the United States (except Puerto Rico), the District of Columbia or Canada (except Quebec) who are eighteen (18) years of age or older (by August 15, 2009) and who are full-time students pursuing an undergraduate degree at an accredited 2- or 4-year college or university in the U.S. or Canada in fall 2009.
Employees and agents, including their family (parents, children, siblings, spouse) and members of their household (whether or not related), of Mental Floss, LLC, Merriam-Webster and Borders Group, Inc. and their subsidiaries, affiliates, distributors, divisions, agencies or of any related entity, including any consultants to Mental Floss, LLC, Merriam-Webster and Borders Group, Inc., are not eligible to participate in the Contest.
Offer void in Puerto Rico, Quebec, outside the United States and Canada and where prohibited by law; offer is subject to all federal, state, local and provincial laws and regulations.
Here's How To Enter: The Contest is entered by online entry only. Go to www.tuitiongiveaway.com , fill out the entry form and submit the essay. Only one entry per person is allowed. All entry information and materials become the property of Mental Floss LLC and Merriam-Webster, Inc. and will not be returned.
Mental Floss LLC and Merriam-Webster, Inc. are not responsible for telecommunications, network, electronic, technical or computer failures of any kind, including any which may affect your entry or the Contest. Mental Floss LLC and Merriam-Webster, Inc. are not responsible for lost, stolen, misdirected, mutilated, late or illegible entries. Entries that are generated by a script, macro, or other automated means are prohibited and such entries and/or those otherwise not in compliance with these Official Rules are disqualified. All entries received by facsimile are disqualified. Mental Floss LLC and Merriam-Webster, Inc. shall have the absolute right to determine if an entry form is in compliance with these Official Rules without notice to the person attempting to enter.
Prizes: 5 Grand Prizes: Five ten thousand dollar ($10,000.00) (U.S. dollars) scholarships will be awarded for full-time students pursuing an undergraduate degree at an accredited, two- or four-year college or university in the U.S. or Canada in August/September of 2009. The prizes will be paid directly to the schools. Winners will also receive a Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary and a two year subscription to mental_floss magazine. The odds of winning depend upon the number of eligible entries received. No more than the advertised number of prizes shall be awarded. Limit one prize per person.
5 Runner-Up Prizes. The First Grand Consolation Prize is a dinner at your school during fall semester 2009 with a co-founder of Mental Floss LLC, namely Will Pearson or Mangesh Hattikudur, and five (5) of your closest friends or a cash award of $250. Four other Runners-up will receive a one year subscription to mental_floss magazine, a mental_floss T-shirt and a Merriam-Webster dictionary.
The Prizes may not be redeemed for cash and may not be substituted or transferred by the winner. Limit one prize per person. No cash equivalent will be paid for any prize, except for the First Consolation Dinner Prize.
Judges: The co-founders of Mental Floss LLC, namely Will Pearson and Mangesh Hattikudur, will select the winners of the contest. The selection will be conducted at the business office of Mental Floss LLC in Russell, Ohio. All results of the selection are final and binding subject to the section entitled "Invalid Entry". The judges shall have the absolute, sole discretion to select the entries.
Notification: The five Grand Prize winners and five Runner-Up winners will be selected by the co-founders of Mental Floss LLC from among all eligible entries received by the Submission Date. Grand Prize Winners and Runner-Up winners will be notified by telephone and/or overnight delivery on or about April 1, 2009.
If unable to make contact with the winner within thirty (30) days after Mental Floss LLC first attempts to notify the winner, or if the winner fails to claim the Prize within thirty (30) days after Mental Floss LLC first attempts to notify the winner, the Prize may be forfeited and awarded to an alternate winner.
Affidavit: The winner will be required to sign, notarize and return to Mental Floss LLC an Affidavit of Eligibility and a Prize and/or Publicity Release. There is typically a fee of $10.00-$15.00 for the services of a Notary Public. Notaries Public can be found at most bank locations, as well as other locations.
Invalid Entry: In the event the winning entry is discovered to be invalid for any reason whatsoever prior to delivery of the Prize or the person who submitted the winning entry does not contact Mental Floss within the time frame specified in the above paragraph, the Prize may be forfeited and awarded to an alternate winner.
Indemnification: By entering the Contest, each participant warrants that he or she has read and agrees to abide by these Official Rules and that he or she is not prohibited from participating in the Contest. Each participant agrees to release, discharge, indemnify and hold harmless Mental Floss LLC, Merriam-Webster, Inc. and Borders Group, Inc. and their parents, subsidiaries, affiliates, share holders, employees, officers, directors, agents, representatives, advertising and promotion agencies and prize suppliers from any liability arising from or related to the Contest, including without limitation, personal injury, death, property damage, or claims based on publicity rights, defamation, or invasion of privacy.
Taxes: The winner is responsible for reporting and paying any and all income, sales or excise taxes that may apply. Mental Floss LLC and Merriam-Webster, Inc. shall not be liable for any such taxes.
Consent to Use of Name, Likeness & Image: By entering the Contest, participants consent to the use of their name, likeness, image and biographical data for advertising and promotional purposes without additional compensation, except where prohibited by law. Because Mental Floss LLC and Merriam-Webster, Inc. collect personal information from participants entering the contest, Mental Floss LLC and Merriam-Webster, Inc. encourage all participants to review the privacy policy which may be found at www.mentalfloss.com.
Consent to Reprint/Reproduce Winning Entries: By entering the Contest, participants consent to the use of their winning entries in mental_floss magazine and on the web sites and publications of Mental Floss LLC and Merriam-Webster, Inc. for advertising and promotional purposes without additional compensation, except where prohibited by law.
Termination of Contest/Modification of Rules: Mental Floss LLC and Merriam-Webster, Inc. reserve the right to terminate the Contest or modify any rules as necessary for any reason or as required by applicable law. Mental Floss LLC and Merriam-Webster, Inc. reserve the right, at their sole discretion, to disqualify any person they believe to have intentionally violated these Official Rules or tampered with any element of the Contest without notice to the disqualified person.
Force Majuere: The performance of the sponsors, Mental Floss LLC and Merriam-Webster, Inc., is subject to force majeure, which shall mean any cause or causes which wholly or partly prevent or delay the performance of obligations arising under this Contest and which are not reasonably in the control of Mental Floss LLC and Merriam-Webster, Inc., and shall include, without limitation, an act of God, nuclear emergence, explosion, fire, epidemic, landslide, lightning, unusually severe weather condition, flood, windstorm or other similar cataclysmic occurrence, an act of public enemy, war, blockade, embargo, insurrection, riot, civil disturbance, restrictions or restraints imposed by law or by rule, regulation or order of governmental authorities, whether Federal, state or local, theft, accident, unauthorized sewer discharge, chemical contamination, and any other cause beyond reasonable control of Mental Floss LLC and Merriam-Webster, Inc. hereunder.
Governing Law: All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules, or the rights and obligations of entrant and Mental Floss LLC and Merriam-Webster, Inc. in connection with the Contest, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Alabama, without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of laws rules or provisions (whether of the State of Alabama or any other jurisdiction), that would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than the State of Alabama. The venue of any legal action regarding these Official Rules and/or the Contest will be a court located in the State of Alabama.
Removal from Mailing List: If the individual wishes to be removed from the mailing list of Mental Floss LLC and Merriam-Webster, Inc. for future contests or sweepstakes, then they may mail a request for removal to

Requests not received within this period will not be processed. Allow four to six weeks for delivery. Vermont residents need not include return postage.
