Watch a 'Bat Volcano' Erupt in Mexico

Near the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve in southern Mexico, there's a spot the locals call Volcán de los Murciélagos—the Volcano of Bats. There are no real volcanoes in the area, but there is a deep limestone cave that's home to eight different species of bats, with totals numbering several million. When dusk falls, the bats "erupt" in a swirling, clockwise stream as they flee from the cave and out into the night. Tropical entomologist and TV host Phil Torres recently visited the site with the Rainforest Alliance, which is doing conservation work in the area, to film the bats in all their crepuscular glory.
