A Few Suggestions for the New $10 Bill

U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew announced yesterday that the $10 bill will be redesigned, and a portrait of a woman will be on it. However, Alexander Hamilton will remain on the bill in some way. The woman to be added has not been decided, and it will be five years before we actually see the redesigned money in our wallets. There is an ongoing campaign to get a woman to replace Jackson on the $20 bill, but Lew said that the $10 was already slated to be the next bill to have an overhaul.

Women on 20s

According to opinion polls, the top contenders so far are Harriet Tubman, Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, and Wilma Mankiller. Many of the serious contenders were featured in a previous mental_floss list, although they are Photoshopped onto a twenty.

The treasury is asking for public input on the bill via the Twitter hashtag #TheNew10, and will announce the person selected in December. There are already a slew of suggestions, some more outlandish than others.

I personally like this younger version of Harriet Tubman, which is an artwork, but shows her as the badass she was during her Underground Railroad days.

If we’re looking for a badass feminist icon, no one goes the extra mile like Imperator Furiosa from the movie Mad Max: Fury Road. She stole the movie from the title character.

How about a newer pop culture idol? Amy Poehler might fit the bill, so to speak.

Somehow, I don’t believe that Caitlyn Jenner has the necessary seniority.

If it all comes down to an internet popularity contest, we all know who would win. But the ultimate decision is up to the Treasury Department.

The problem with all the above suggestions is that the guidelines say the person must be real (Lady Liberty excepted) and must be deceased. However, this suggestion fits both of those requirements.

Well, do you have any better ideas?
