The Evolution of the Final Girl in Horror Movies

During the ‘70s and ‘80s, the Final Girl was an important character throughout the whole story. She was typically the one who abstained from drugs, alcohol, and sex, often going against everything that her peers wanted. It’s something that Scream brought up, sharing the rules of surviving a horror movie. Those who remained a virgin throughout would likely guarantee their survival.

However, it was more than just being pure. The Final Girl tended to be the smartest person in the room. She was the one who was able to think on her feet, push away the feelings of fear, and push herself to the limits when she was at risk of death.

There were certainly times when she would make mistakes, such as running up the stairs instead of out the front door, but there was this focus on showing how to survive in difficult situations. It’s always about instinct.

In the 1990s, things changed a little. As the interest in the slasher movies started to decline a bit, horror filmmakers had to find a new way to draw people in. What better way than having a Final Girl with some grit? How about a Final Girl who would poke fun at all the previous Final Girls?

Over the years, the Final Girl has become a huge part of stories and franchises. In 2015, the horror-comedy movie The Final Girls released, and Grady Hendrix published The Final Girl Support Group in 2021.
