The Importance of the Sitcom Themes of the ‘90s

Theme songs have always been important. If you attend an activity like a musical bingo night, you will likely find that TV theme songs is a warm-up round, and the cards are usually filled with theme songs from the ‘60s, ’70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s. After that, things get a little bit quiet.

In the ‘90s, the theme songs tended to dominate the charts. When you hear “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” you know exactly where you were when that first hit the airwaves. Everyone sang along when the TV show started. The track for the airwaves usually included an extra verse, and you proved your skills when you could sing it all.

The Rembrandts also saw chart success with “I’ll Be There for You” with the help of Friends. It’s another theme song that you could sing by heart, and it made the credits as must-watch viewing. After all, you needed to see each season if certain elements of the characters’ actions would match the beat.

Now, the theme songs of Boy Meets World or Family Matters will make you think back to the time and place. Music has a way of unlocking memories, and that type of nostalgia is sometimes exactly what we need as days get hard.

One of the great things about the theme songs is that they unlocked merchandise options. With CD sales and music videos, it was possible to push the TV shows more, helping them stay on the air for longer. After all, Friends is iconic, and while we know the show was good, the theme song is something that captured our hearts and made us tune in.
