The Biggest Icons of the 1970s
While there were some greats who started in the ‘60s and moved into the ‘70s, there were many others who started to really make a name for themselves in the decade of disco. Al Pacino was one of those who moved through the decades and quickly helped to kick-start the love for crime and gangster movies with The Godfather in 1972.
Robert De Niro also captured hearts in the ‘70s with movies such as Mean Streets and The Deer Hunter. He is a man of many talents, managing to make us laugh and also have us on the edge of our seats with his dramatic performances.
Another actor who seamlessly fits into all genres is Dustin Hoffman. In the 1970s, he made his name in the likes of Straw Dogs and Kramer vs. Kramer, but he would go on to win hearts in many other iconic movies.
We also can’t overlook Jack Nicholson, who most will remember for The Shining. However, before that 1980 release, he proved his worth in Five Easy Pieces in 1970 and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest in 1975. Bringing heart and soul, you knew not to underestimate him in anything you watched.
The end of the decade saw one particular star shoot up: Harrison Ford. He made a name for himself as Han Solo in Star Wars, and he would later take on the iconic role of Indiana Jones. He remains a firm favorite today, whether he’s donning his hat and lasso or taking on a new character.
Of course, we can’t overlook the women who made the decade wonderful, starting with Jane Fonda. She quickly became a force to be reckoned with from Klute and Coming Home, but she also made it clear that you didn’t just have to act. Fonda focused on being an activist and a voice for women.
Faye Dunaway stole the show in many movies, including Chinatown and Network. She was always glamorous, projecting everything that was expected of a starlet at the time.
Finally, we need to remember Diane Keaton, another talent of the decade. Whether it was in The Godfather or Annie Hall, she made it clear she had the range and would be a star to watch out for!
