The Evolution of Horror Movies in the 1980s
While we have seen a revival of the slasher subgenre in the late ‘90s and into the 2000s and 2010s, it was the 1980s that really put this type of horror movie on the map. Friday the 13th started it all in 1980, with the summer camp setup and the masked killer killing off everyone there.
Then, A Nightmare on Elm Street continued the theme. This time, we gained a new fear of falling asleep. How could we possibly close our eyes when a villain was in the characters’ dreams and killing them off in there? It didn’t just bring us slasher, but it also brought supernatural elements seeped in lore and legend.
At the same time, with the way technology started to change, it became possible to produce types of horror movies that were once only a dream. There was much more gore and wild special effects, allowing for the introduction of the likes of The Evil Dead and Hellraiser. They created visceral body horror that many have attempted to recreate over the years. Of course, these movies also relied on awesome practical effects as well.
We also can’t overlook the way body horror morphed from not just the gore but the way people would turn into monsters. An American Werewolf in London and The Fly came out in the 1980s, bringing revolutionary transformation sequences.
